Non-invasive ventilation increases survival rate of chronic respiratory disease in ICU patients
The conclusions of this paper state that correct application of non-invasive ventilation after extubation increases survival of critical chronic respiratory patients in 20%
This technique is easy to use in any ICU. The concerning paper proves it’s beneficial effects if applied immediately after extubation in patients suffering from chronic respiratory disease and high indicators of disease severity. Complications after extubation drop in over 30% of the cases and 90 days survival was increased in 20%. The conclusions of the study will cause the adaptation of the international clinical practice.

C-Reactive Protein Improves Prediction of Mortality in Community-Acquired Pneumonia
The journal Thorax publishes the results of this study involving cooperation between Hospital la Fe, Valencia and Hospital Clínic, Barcelona
A study recently published in Thorax and led by Dr. Rosario Menéndez of Hospital la Fe, Valencia, found that C-reactive protein improves the prediction of mortality of the commonly used prognostic scores.

TV3 Marathon Presents Results of Projects on Chronic Respiratory Diseases (II)
Dr. Antoni Torres presents the results of the project carried out with the participation of Dr. Rosario Menéndez.
The 10th Symposium of the TV3 Marathon Foundation was held on 30 June, during which the results of the projects on chronic respiratory diseases, financed with funds obtained from the 2003 Marathon, were presented. Dr. Antoni Torres presented the results of the project: Risk and Outcome Factors of Community Acquired Pneumonia in Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. Alicia San José, a Research Nurse, Joins the Research Group
Alicia will take the place of Raquel Piñer, who, after several years in Barcelona, has decided to return to her home
On 16 June, after a rigorous selection process, Alicia San José joined our research group in the role of research nurse. Her task is to provide a transversal service to different lines and take on the role of study coordinator of the European project Mastering of Hospital Antibiotic Resistance (MOSAR).

First Conference on Shared Care in Respiratory Medicine
The main objective of the conference was to build closer links between primary care and respiratory medicine in relation to the management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
On 16 June, 90 doctors and nursing staff debated topics relating to COPD, following several sessions in which a speaker from primary care and a speaker from respiratory medicine had taken part, The conference was a success and was accredited and declared of scientific interest by the Catalan Society of Family and Community Medicine (CAMFIC).

Oriol Sibila Gives the Young Researcher Lecture at the 42nd SEPAR Conference
His conference dealt with the importance of the inflammatory response associated with respiratory infections
More than 3000 health care professionals took part in the 42nd Conference of the Spanish Society of Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery (SEPAR), held between 5 and 8 June at the Santander Palace of Exhibitions. During the conference, some 640 scientific papers were given out, more than 60 commercial exhibitors were present, and a dozen courses were taught.

Success and normality at this year’s meeting of the American Thoracic Society (ATS), despite the new flu
Chronicle of the 2009 ATS Conference held in San Diego (USA), by Dr. Joan Ramon Badia
The annual conference of the American Thoracic Societywas held in San Diego from 15 to 20 May. Our research group, represented by several members, presented data from different studies in progress in both the respiratory disease and cancer lines. There was a poster session on respiratory infections, held in the Sailing Pavilion.

The IAMR Group Successfully Develops the Second Phase of the European Study MOSAR to Reduce Resistance to Antibiotics
MOSAR is a project related to GRACE and has been in operation since 2008. It involves the participation of 9 countries of the European Union, 50 centers and a budget of €12 million
MOSAR is an international multicenter project funded by the European Union and monitors resistances to antibiotics presented by nosocomial bacteria. The main objective of the project is to inform health care professionals on strategies to combat resistances and prevent the propagation of infectious agents throughout the community.

Hospital Clínic Leads the Recruitment of Patients in the European GRACE Study to Reduce Resistance to Antibiotics
GRACE is a large project that has been in operation since 2006 and involves the participation of more than 10 countries of the European Union, with a budget of €11,500,000
Following a considerable effort by all the patient care staff of the Eixample Primary Health Care Consortium (CAPSE), we reached first place in the European project, Genomics to combat Resistance against Antibiotics in community-acquired LRTI in Europe (GRACE), with a total of 246 patients recruited during the 2008/2009 season, after Poland in the overall ranking of the study, which has 445 patients.

The Spanish Society of Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery (SEPAR) Awards Grants to two Research Projects of the IAMR Group in the 2008 Call for Grant Applications.
The SEPAR2008 Grants of Fundació Respira (Spanish Lung Foundation) are worth €390,000.
The IAMR research team was successful in the 2008 call for SEPAR - Fundació Respira grants. Doctors Ramón Marrades and Miquel Ferrer obtained funding to carry out their research projects in the field of lung cancer and mechanical ventilation.
