Dr. Carlos Ferrando is a specialist in Anesthesiology and Critical Care with a strong academic and research background. He graduated in Medicine from the University of Valencia (2004) and completed his residency in Anesthesiology and Critical Care at Hospital Clínico Universitario de Valencia (2010). He obtained his Ph.D. in 2011 with cum laude distinction, with a thesis focused on the immunomodulatory effects of sevoflurane in an ARDS model.


In addition to his clinical training, he holds the European Diploma in Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (ESAIC, 2014), and Master’s degrees in Bioethics and in Healthcare anagement from the University of Valencia.


He currently leads the Surgical Intensive Care Unit within the Department of nesthesiology at Hospital Clínic de Barcelona and serves as an Associate Professor at the University of Barcelona. Previously, he was Head of the Cardiothoracic Unit and Research Coordinator at Hospital Clínico Universitario de Valencia, and Associate Professor at the University of Valencia.


Dr. Carlos Ferrando is actively involved in clinical research, particularly in perioperative care, mechanical ventilation, and ARDS. He coordinates the iPROVE international research network and has led multiple multicenter clinical trials. He has published over 150 scientific articles, many as corresponding author, and has supervised five Ph.D. theses (cum laude).

His research has contributed to national and international clinical guidelines and has led to impactful findings that have changed clinical practice, especially regarding corticosteroid use in ARDS and individualized ventilation strategies during surgery.


He has been Editor-in-Chief of the Revista Española de Anestesiología y Cuidados Críticos until 2025; A board member of the Spanish Society of Anesthesiology, and a member of the CIBER of Respiratory Diseases (CIBERES), as well as the IDIBAPS research group led by Prof. Antoni Torres. His work has been recognized with several awards, including the ESA Young Investigator Award and recognition as an Emerging Researcher by INCLIVA.
