The use of anti-inflammatory drugs significantly reduces treatment failure in severe pneumonia

The use of corticosteroids, a group of anti-inflammatory drugs, along with antibiotics, significantly reduces treatment failure among patients with severe community-acquired pneumonia from 31% to 13 %, at the same time that improves their prognosis. The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) publishes this study led by researchers from Hospital Clínic of Barcelona, IDIBAPS and the Networked Biomedical Research Center for Respiratory Diseases (CIBERES). Dr. Antoni Torres, Pneumologist at Hospital Clínic of Barcelona, professor at the University of Barcelona and coordinator of the IDIBAPS and CIBERES group that has led this research, is the first author of the paper.

El Dr. Antoni Torres, premio a la excelencia investigadora “ICREA Acadèmia” 2013
El Dr. Antoni Torres, miembro del Servicio de Neumología del Instituto Clínic del Tórax (ICT) y profesor de la UB, ha sido recientemente premiado por el Programa ICREA Acadèmia 2013 a la excelencia en la investigación en el Área “Life & Medical Sciences”. Junto al Dr. Torres, 148 científicos más provenientes de diversos ámbitos y centros, de ellos 118 hombres y 30 mujeres, han recibido el premio en esta sexta edición.
ICREA Acadèmia es un programa de apoyo a la investigación destinado exclusivamente al profesorado de las universidades públicas en activo. El reconocimiento ICREA comporta una dedicación prioritaria a la investigación durante 5 años y dota al premiado con una asignación anual que ha de destinar preferentemente a la contratación de personal de apoyo a su actividad investigadora.

Anna Motos se incorpora al grupo de investigación
Realiza en el equipo el Trabajo Final del Máster de Medicina Traslacional
Trabaja, entre otros, en el ensayo clínico centrado en estudiar el efecto del tratamiento sistémico con linezolid y vacomicina en el biofilm de los tubos endotraqueales de pacientes intubados con neumonía causada por Staphylococcus aureus resistente a meticilina.

This postdoctoral position ensures his line of research for the following three years at the Ciberes lead by Prof A. Torres
Dr. Gianluigi Li Bassi obtained a high score result (98/100) after an accurate evaluation of the main items related to his professional career and the team where he will work the following three years.
This subprogram for human resources is aimed to support young researchers to favour their professional career and enhance the research at the research group they are going to be incorporated. The financing conditions are 28.800 euros anually for the next 3 years.

Our research team in respiratory medicine has obtained grant for 2 projects in the latest call for grant applications of the Health Care Research Fund (FIS)
With 2 new financed projects this research group ensures the continuity of some of the main lines of research it is developing.
Our research team in respiratory medicine has obtained a resounding success in the latest call for grant applications of the Health Care Research Fund (FIS). With 2 new financed projects, this research group ensures the continuity of some of the main lines of research it is developing. The new three year projects financed are the following:
1. Leaded by Dr. Nestor Soler, it's entitled: "Diagnostic value of Pancreatic Stone Protein (PSP / reg) in infectious exacerbation of COPD: relevance of the microbiome."2. Leaded by Dr. Jacob Sellarés, it's entitled: Association of MBL (Mannose binding lectin) pathway deficiency and pneumococcal serotypes in invasive pneumococcal disease. This is a bicentric coordinated study, the coordinating centre is Hospital La Fe de Valencia and the IP Dr. Rosario Menéndez. -

The effect of neuraminidase inhibitors is analized by a consortium leaded by investigators of the Division of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Nottingham
The results of this meta-analysis, in which Prof. Torres and IAMR have collaborated, have been recently published in Lancet Respiratory Medicine journal
This study includes 29 234 patients from 78 studies of patients admitted to hospital between Jan 2, 2009, and March 14, 2011. In conclusion, this meta-analysis advocates the early instigation of neuraminidase inhibitors treatment in adults admitted to hospital with suspected or proven influenza infection. Complete access to the results and methods of this meta-analysis are available in Lancet Respiratory Medicine journal. Prof. Antoni Torres is one of the authors and has contributed with data from the intensive respiratory unit that he leads at the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona.
