Degree in Medicine from the University of Barcelona. He coordinates the research line on Physiopathology and the biological implications of weaning from mechanical ventilation. This line combines clinical studies of patients and basic research to study the relationship between physiopathology and the inflammatory response and oxidative stress applied to weaning. The objective is to recognize biomarkers that allow us to optimize the process of withdrawing intubation.
The process of weaning from mechanical ventilation corresponds to the moment in which patients are disconnected from mechanical ventilation once their illness has improved. This process accounts for between 40% and 60% of the time patients spend in intubation. Although this process is governed by protocol, 15% of patients show failure of this process, increasing mortality. To reduce the risk, patients are studied during the process of weaning from mechanical ventilation and physiopathologic variables are related to the inflammatory response and systemic oxidative stress under different conditions.
This line of research aims to provide better knowledge of the biological and physiopathologic mechanisms involved in weaning, recognize outcome and predictive factors of withdrawal of mechanical ventilation and determine how the different biological markers can influence it.
