Doctor of Medicine from the University of Barcelona. He is a specialist in respiratory medicine and works on the research line on Acute Lung Injury and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS-ALI). This is an essentially clinical line of research involving the evaluation of patient databases in order to extract useful information for the practical management of the disease.

The aim of this line of research is to gain a clear understanding of the incidence, clinical characteristics and course of patients with lung injury and acute respiratory distress syndrome.  It also focuses on aspects such as the definition of the entity and studies are being initiated that will aim to achieve a better understanding of aspects such as inflammation and apoptosis in ARDS-ALI.

As an investigator of the IAMR group, he participates directly in studies of noninvasive ventilation (NIV), weaning from mechanical ventilation and ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). He also collaborates actively with the research group on intensive care of the University of Toronto. With this group, he has carried out a meta-analysis on the mortality of ARDS-ALI and is currently working on a study to evaluate possible changes in the definition of this disease. He is also involved in multicenter studies on genetic aspects associated with acute lung injury.

Research in this field has helped to establish and disseminate recommendations for optimum management of this disease. It has also encouraged efforts to ensure maximum quality in care and optimum ventilator support. Furthermore, detailed evaluation of the literature has shown that, contrary to what was expected, mortality in ARDS-ALI continues to be extraordinarily high. This has provided additional motivation to continue working in this field and applying or evaluating all therapeutic options and technical innovations that may help patients.
