Researchers from IAMR group publish in Nature Biotechnology a ‘Living medicine’ created to tackle drug-resistant lung infections.
This excellent result comes from a collaborative consortium in which our IDIBAPS-Ciberes group added an important translational value on this new promising technology developed by CRG, also with the collaboration of Institute of Agrobiotechnology (IdAB), a joint research institute of Spain’s CSIC and the government of Navarre. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41587-022-01584-9#citeas.
Researchers have designed the first ‘living medicine’ to treat lung infections. The treatment targets Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a type of bacteria which is naturally resistant to many types of antibiotics and is a common source of infections in hospitals.
The treatment involves using a modified version of the bacterium Mycoplasma pneumoniae, removing its ability to cause disease and repurposing it to attack P. aeruginosa instead. The modified bacterium is used in combination with low doses of antibiotics that would otherwise not work on their own.
Researchers tested the efficacy of the treatment in mice, finding that it significantly reduced lung infections. The ‘living medicine’ doubled mouse survival rate compared to not using any treatment. Administering a single, high dose of the treatment showed no signs of toxicity in the lungs. Once the treatment had finished its course, the innate immune system cleared the modified bacteria in a period of four days.

Researchers from the Hospital Clínic-IDIBAPS lead the CIBERSUCICOVID project, which is about to identify the risk factors and prognosis of the patients infected by COVID-19 ingressats to the ICUs since the pandemic is going to start in Spain
Researchers from the Hospital Clínic-IDIBAPS lead the CIBERSUCICOVID project, which is about to identify the risk factors and prognosis of the patients infected by COVID-19 ingressats to the ICUs since the pandemic is going to start in Spain
Dr. Antoni Torres is the coordinator of the CIBERESUCICOVID project: Risk factors and prognosis of patients infected by COVID-19 and follow-up to any of the patients who have entered the Spanish ICUs.
The project is developed by researchers of the CIBER of Respiratory Diseases (CIBERES) and coordinated from the Hospital Clínic-IDIBAPS lead by Dr Antoni Torres.
The project forms part of the investigations carried out through the COVID-19 Fund at the end of the year 2020 and managed by the ISCIII, and will receive a total financing of 1,750,000 euros. He has comptat, així mateix, with the support of the Spanish Society of Intensive Critical Medicine and Coronary Unit (SEMICYUC) and the Spanish Society of Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery (SEPAR), with the participation of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC).
The main results show that the mortality rate of the patients entered by COVID-19 to the Spanish ICUs will be 31%.
CIBERESUCICOVID started in February 2020 and ends on December 31, 2021, has had the participation of more than 5,700 patients, enrolled in 69 Spanish ICUs, and has analyzed 1,068 samples of blood for the studies of epigenetics and biomarkers. Among the conclusions, it is worth highlighting the death rate at any of the high hospital, since, according to the results, more than 1% of the patients who have been in intensive cures. In addition, the CIBERES researchers have also identified the acquisition of an intra-hospital (nosocomial) pneumonia during entry with a factor associated with the persistence of coronavirus symptoms after three months. “We have studied the effect of corticosteroids on in-hospital mortality, finding several phenotypes in which no benefit is observed depending on age, initial severity, inflammatory status, and the absence of lymphopenia. Our results, therefore, will help to define which serious patients should receive corticosteroids ”, explains Torres

A new article is published in Journal of Internal Medicine.
The article is entitled: Low anti‐SARS‐CoV‐2 S antibody levels predict increased mortality and dissemination of viral components in the blood of critical COVID‐19 patients.
In this article we studied the impact of antiSARS-CoV-2 S antibodies levels on survival, viral RNA-load in plasma, and N-antigenaemia in 92 COVID-19 patients over ICU admission. The corresponding author is Dr Antoni Torres.

Original Research Article has been published recently on the Critical Care Journal
Original Research Article has been published recently on the Critical Care Journal
The article is entitled: The evolution of the ventilatory ratio is a prognostic factor in mechanically ventilated COVID-19 ARDS patients.
In this study comparing changes in parameters between day 1 and day 3 of mechanical ventilation in COVID-19 ARDS patients, a higher ventilatory ratio at day 1 and more importantly an increase in the ratio by day 3 were significant predictors of in-hospital mortality. The significance of this finding is not completely understood but might reflect vascular microthrombosis phenomena and/or alveolar edema, factors associated with increased physiologic dead space. The first co-authors are Antoni Torres and Anna Motos.
