Manel Esteller and Andrés Esteban de la Torre receive the 2009 Biomedical Research Awards of the Lilly Foundation
This prize acknowledges the research career of the best scientists working in Spain and encourages continuity of their work by funding their projects.
Doctor Antonio Torres, head of the respiratory medicine department of Hospital Clínic, Barcelona, the IDIBAPS group and CIBERES, attended the event yesterday as a 2007 winner and presented the scientific results obtained with the help of the Lilly grant money. The Minister for Science and Innovation stated that the new government plans will encourage biomedical research in public hospitals, particularly translational research with repercussions for the treatment and outcome of patients.
The prize grants are €200,000 in the preclinical category and €150,000 in the clinical category destined to provide support for the start-up or continuity of research projects in the group. Other winners from Hospital Clínic-IDIBAPS include: Joan Rodés (Clinical, 2004), Emili Montserrat Costa (Clinical, 2003) and Ramón Gomis (Clinical, 2002).
