The Spanish Society of Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery (SEPAR) Awards Grants to two Research Projects of the IAMR Group in the 2008 Call for Grant Applications.
The SEPAR2008 Grants of Fundació Respira (Spanish Lung Foundation) are worth €390,000.
The IAMR research team was successful in the 2008 call for SEPAR - Fundació Respira grants (http://www.separ.es). Doctors Ramón Marrades and Miquel Ferrer obtained funding to carry out their research projects in the field of lung cancer and mechanical ventilation.
Dr. Ramón Marrades obtained a SEPAR 08 grant for his project, Expression and quantification of mi-RNA in lung tissue and in systemic circulation. The objective of this project is to determine the presence of new molecules (microRNA) in the blood of normal lung tissue and in tumorous lung tissue from patients with lung cancer. The determinations are carried out during surgery and during the 3-year follow-up period. The research team is made up of Dr. Ramón Marrades and Dr. Arturo Huerta, the IAMR group from IDIBAPS, and the biologist Alfons Navarro and professor Mariano Monzó of the faculty of medicine. As well as the SEPAR grant, this project receives funding from FIS and the Catalan Pulmonology Society (SOCAP).
Dr. Miquel Ferrer obtained another SEPAR 08 grant for his project, Inflammatory response and oxidative stress during weaning from mechanical ventilation in acute-phase chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The main objective of this project is to analyze the association between the different markers of inflammatory response and the failure or success of weaning. It will also evaluate the use of inflammatory markers as predictive values for post-extubation respiratory failure and will analyze the associations between levels of systemic oxidative stress and dependency on or duration of mechanical ventilation in general and during the weaning process specifically. The research team is made up of Doctors Miquel Ferrer, Jacob Sellarès and Hugo Loureiro and research nurse, Raquel Piñer. This project is also funded by FIS.
SEPAR-Fundació Respira awards a number of grants each year with the aim of encouraging research in the field of respiratory disease. There are several grants, with a value of between €6000 and €12,000. The grant awards will take place at the 42nd SEPAR congress in (SEPAR 2009) in Santander between 5 and 8 June (http://www.congresosepar.es).
