TV3 Marathon Presents Results of Projects on Chronic Respiratory Diseases (II)
Dr. Antoni Torres presents the results of the project carried out with the participation of Dr. Rosario Menéndez.
The 10th Symposium of the TV3 Marathon Foundation was held on 30 June during which the results of the projects on chronic respiratory diseases, financed with funds obtained from the 2003 Marathon, were presented. Dr. Antoni Torres Martí, coordinator of the group on Applied Research on Respiratory Diseases (IAMR), presented the results of the project: Risk and Outcome Factors of Community Acquired Pneumonia in Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. Impact of the Inflammatory Response.
This project, carried out with the participation of Dr. Rosario Menéndez Villanueva of La Fe University Hospital, Valencia, detected differences in the medication used in patients with COPD who develop pneumonia or severe exacerbations. This makes it possible to better characterize this population and determine the course of the disease. The information is of considerable use in deciding on preventive strategies. This study has provided better information on the systemic inflammatory response in COPD with pneumonia or exacerbation, thereby contributing to better management of the disease. The inflammatory response profile has prognostic implications and can contribute to designing different treatment strategies according to the profile of this response. Complementary to this, the analysis of the inflammatory response and the diverse phenotypic activation of the pulmonary macrophage in COPD may allow further progress in different therapeutic approaches.
