Jacob Sellarés successfully defended his doctoral thesis: physiopathology and role of Non-invasive ventilation in weaning failure
The event took place last week in the Universitat de Barcelona Faculty of Medicine
Jacob Sellarés is a Hospital Clínic de Barcelona pulmonologist and he is an IAMR research group member. Since he started working in Clínic 5 years ago, his research has focused on the mechanical ventilation weaning process, technically known as weaning. The room 11 of the Universitat de Barcelona Faculty of Medicine held last June the 30th the public defence of his doctoral thesis. The The thesis tribunal comprised Dr. Antoni Ferrer (Hospital del Mar), Dr. Jordi Mancebo (Hospital de Sant Pau) and Dr. Andrés Esteban (Hospital Universitario de Getafe).
The first article, Respiratory Impedance during weaning from mechanical ventilation in a mixed population of critically ill patients (Br. J. Anaesth. 2009 103: 828-832), proves that, given an heterogeneous population, respiratory mechanics, elasticity and resistance patterns don’t show significant alteration among patients with either successful or failed weaning. Therefore, the authors recommend the use of this technique when early identifying the reversible causes of weaning failure when respiratory mechanics worsening is clear.
The second article, Non-invasive ventilation after extubation in hypercapnic patients with chronic respiratory disorders: randomised controlled trial (Lancet 2009; 374: 1082-88), proves that Non-invasive ventilation is highly beneficial to a subgroup of patients, that is, those with advanced chronic respiratory illness and hipercapnia when extubated.
Dr. Jacob Sellarés brilliantly defended his doctoral thesis and he obtained the best qualification, Excellent Cum Laude. The thesis tribunal pointed out the quality of the articles and congratulated both Sellarés and his thesis directors, Dr. Antoni Torres and Dr. Miquel Ferrer, on their outstanding research career.
