Mauricio Valencia succesfully defended his doctoral thesis: prevention of complications associated with mecahnical ventilation
The public event was held last April 14th in the University of Barcelona, Faculty of Medicine
Mauricio Valencia is an intensive care physishian who is currently working in the Medical Intensive Care Service in the Hospital Universitario del Sagrat Cor in Barcelona. However, he carried out his doctoral thesis in the Applied Research in Respiratory diseases IDIBAPS group, which is led by Prof. Antoni Torres. During his stay in Hospital Clinic, Dr.Valencia’s research focused on the prevention of complications associated with mecahnical ventilation. Results were published in two first quartile journals which have a high impact factor: American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine and Critical Care Medicine. The public event took place last April 14th in the University of Barcelona, Faculty of Medicine, Room 15, and the thesis tribunal comprised Dra. Paula Ramírez, from Hospital La Fe in Valencia, Dr. Antoni Artigas, from Parc Taulí in Sabadell and Dr. Javier Ruiz, from Hospital Universitari del Sagrat Cor in Barcelona.
The first article, Early Noninvasive Ventilation Averts Extubation Failure in Patients at Risk. A Randomized Trial (Am J Respir Crit Care Med 2006, 173: 164-170), proves that the early use of noninvasive ventilation averted respiratory failure after extubation and decreased intensive care unit mortality among patients at increased risk. The second article, Automatic control of tracheal tube cuff pressure in ventilated patients in semirecumbent position: a randomized trial. (Crit Care Med. 2007;35(6):1543-9) proves that the utilisation of an automatic device for the automatic regulation of the tracheal tube cuff was effective in maintaining appropriate inflation (Pcuff 20 cm H2O) compared with routine care.
Dr. Mauricio Valencia brilliantly defended his doctoral thesis and he obtained the best qualification, Excellent Cum Laude. The thesis tribunal pointed out the quality of the articles and congratulated both Valencia and his thesis directors, Prof. Antoni Torres and Dr. Miquel Ferrer, on their outstanding research career.
