Laia Fernandez Barat awarded for the best clinical poster of the Eurobiofilms 2011 organized by European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID)
The event took place from the 6th to the 8th of July in Copenhagen at the Panum Institute in Denmark
Laia Fernandez Barat’s project "Confocal microscopy analysis of bacterial viability in endotracheal tube Biofilm from a pig model of MRSA pneumonia receiving antimicrobial therapy" won the best clinical poster award at the second European Congress on Microbial Biofilms- basic and clinical aspects, celebrated from the 6th to the 8th of July. This investigator, whose background is on biomedical biology, did an oral presentation on the same topic the 7th of July, in a specific symposium for Biofilm-based medical device related infections and host response.
This project suggests that systemic treatment with linezolid reduces significantly bacterial viability inside endotracheal tube. The viability was assessed through the analysis of 127 images obtained by confocal scanning laser microscopy and the results match with the bacterial viability assessed by microbiological analysis of endotracheal tube.
The congress was organized by the ESCMID study group for biofilms. The president of Eurobiofilms 2011 was Prof. Niels Høiby. The event took place from the 6th to the 8th of July in Copenhagen at the Panum Institute in Denmark and resulted in a great opportunity to meet biofilm experts and investigators from all over the world, to learn the state of the art on clinical and basic aspects of biofilm and to enjoy the beautiful city of Copenhagen.
