Elena Prina and Valeria Giunta presented their work at the IV CIBERES Training Meeting in Mallorca
Elena Prina presented a poster about Thrombocytosis as a Diagnostic and Prognostic Marker in Community Acquired Pneumonia and Valeria Giunta presented a poster about bacterial translocation into airways during mechanical ventilation
Both Research Physicians, Elena Prina and Valeria Giunta presented their work in a poster session at the IV CIBER Training Meeting on Respiratory Diseases that was held in Mallorca last 27-28th of October.
Attending the specialization in internal medicine, Elena Prina takes part in the line of research on community acquired pneumonia (CAP) and this time presented a poster session on Thrombocytosis as a Diagnostic and Prognostic Marker in Community Acquired Pneumonia. Among the main results of her research it is important to highlight that both thrombocytopenia and thrombocytosis could be a marker of poor outcome; that the principle complications in thrombocytosis group were related to local inflammatory reaction such as exudate and empyema; And finally, that this study suggests to monitorize platelet count in order to assess the severity of patients with CAP.
Attending the specialization in Pneumology, Valeria Giunta takes part in the line of research on the animal model and she presented a poster session on Assessment of tracheal tube biofilm translocation during mechanical ventilation and lung injury. Among the main results of her research it is important to mention that although bacteria translocate during mechanical ventilation, there is not difference on rates of translocation between differents lenght of stay under mechanical ventilation or lung injury caused by oleic acid. Interestingly, translocation is higher in proximal airways in comparison with distal airways. These results question the role of biofilm in VAP.
Several young researchers from other autonomous communities of Spain attended the IV CIBERES Training Meeting in Mallorca and they had the chance to share both their experiences and the national and international studies that they are carrying out.
