SEPAR awarded two Applied Research in Respiratory Diseases group's projects with a research grant
The total budget for 2012 SEPAR research grants is around 500 000 euros
Dr. Miquel Ferrer leads a project funded with 12 000 Euros: Potential benefits of the "Lateral Trendelenburg" in preventing pneumonia associated with mechanical ventilation. Recent studies suggest that gravity plays a key role in the pathogenesis of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). The present animal study was designed to assess whether a tracheal orientation under the horizontal, in the "Lateral Trendelenburg", prevents oropharyngeal pathogen translocation to the lungs by gravity, thereby decreasing the incidence of VAP.
Dr. Eva Polverino leads another project funded with 12 000 Euros: Epidemiology and clinical-microbiological characterization of exacerbations in cystic fibrosis associated bronchiectasis. No prospective studies have thoroughly investigated yet the cause of exacerbations suffered by patients with cystic fibrosis associated bronchiectasis, despite it affects significantly their quality of life and disease progression. This multicenter study involving 6 centers, which will last about three years, aims to detail bacterial, viral and non-infectious causes. It will also investigate the association between the etiology of exacerbations and the main characteristics of the patients and the clinical course of the exacerbation.
Fundación Respira opens annually, through the SEPAR Board of Directors, a call for grants with the aim to promote research and training. The SEPAR research grants are awarded to outstanding projects focused on relevant projects devoted to the study of the lung and pulmonary respiratory/chest diseases.
