Success and normality at this year’s meeting of the American Thoracic Society (ATS), despite the new flu

The annual conference of the American Thoracic Societywas held in San Diego from 15 to 20 May. Our research group, represented by several members, presented data from different studies in progress in both the respiratory disease and cancer lines. There was a poster session on respiratory infections, held in the Sailing Pavilion.

The IAMR Group Successfully Develops the Second Phase of the European Study MOSAR to Reduce Resistance to Antibiotics
MOSAR is a project related to GRACE and has been in operation since 2008. It involves the participation of 9 countries of the European Union, 50 centers and a budget of €12 million
MOSAR is an international multicenter project funded by the European Union and monitors resistances to antibiotics presented by nosocomial bacteria. The main objective of the project is to inform health care professionals on strategies to combat resistances and prevent the propagation of infectious agents throughout the community.

Hospital Clínic Leads the Recruitment of Patients in the European GRACE Study to Reduce Resistance to Antibiotics
GRACE is a large project that has been in operation since 2006 and involves the participation of more than 10 countries of the European Union, with a budget of €11,500,000
Following a considerable effort by all the patient care staff of the Eixample Primary Health Care Consortium (CAPSE), we reached first place in the European project, Genomics to combat Resistance against Antibiotics in community-acquired LRTI in Europe (GRACE), with a total of 246 patients recruited during the 2008/2009 season, after Poland in the overall ranking of the study, which has 445 patients.

The Spanish Society of Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery (SEPAR) Awards Grants to two Research Projects of the IAMR Group in the 2008 Call for Grant Applications.
The SEPAR2008 Grants of Fundació Respira (Spanish Lung Foundation) are worth €390,000.
The IAMR research team was successful in the 2008 call for SEPAR - Fundació Respira grants. Doctors Ramón Marrades and Miquel Ferrer obtained funding to carry out their research projects in the field of lung cancer and mechanical ventilation.

Manel Esteller and Andrés Esteban de la Torre receive the 2009 Biomedical Research Awards of the Lilly Foundation
This prize acknowledges the research career of the best scientists working in Spain and encourages continuity of their work by funding their projects.
Doctor Manel Esteller, director of the Cancer Epigenetics and Biology Program of the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute and Dr. Andrés Esteban de la Torre, head of the intensive care department of Getafe University Hospital and head of the CIBER of Respiratory Diseases (CIBERES), received the 2009 Biomedical Research Awards in the categories of preclinical and clinical biomedical research, respectively. The award ceremony, which was first held in 2002, was presided over by the Minister for Science and Innovation, Cristina Garmendia.

Antonio Torres and Rosario Menéndez are members of the SEPAR advisory working group for the new flu virus
This is an initiative of the Spanish Society of Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery (SEPAR) for the prevention, control and monitoring of the epidemiologic evolution of the new flu virus.
Dr. Antoni Torres and Dr. Rosario Menéndez form part of the SEPAR advisory working group (http://www.separ.es/) to collaborate with the Directorate General of Public Health in issuing reports, updating action protocols and expert opinions on the situation created by the epidemic of the new flu virus.

The Catalan Pulmonology Foundation (FUCAP) has awarded grants to two research projects of the IAMR group in the 2009 call for applications.
Every year, FUCAP calls for applications for grants with the aim of encouraging patient-care, teaching and research work in the field of respiratory disease.
The IAMR research team was successful in the 2009 call for grant applications by the Catalan pulmonology foundation (FUCAP). Doctors Antoni Torres, Gianluigi Li Bassi and Montserrat Rigol were awarded the Maria Ravà grant and Doctor Eva Polverino, the researcher Catia Cillóniz and research nurse Cristina Esquinas were awarded the LETI grant.

Mortality linked to acute respiratory distress syndrome has not fallen in 15 years
The study presents a systematic review of mortality due to ARDS between 1985 and 2006, with statistical analysis of the data using meta-regression studies.
Mechanical ventilation techniques have advanced considerably in recent years. Nevertheless, contrary to what was believed by the medical community, mortality has not fallen in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
