IAMR group joins a doctor of internal medicine for the line of CAP and NIV
She comes from the University of Milan to gain experience in research
The latest incorporation at the research group is Elena Prina, graduated in Medicine from the University of Milan. She is currently doing the residency in internal medicine at the University of Milan. Her role in the research team will be to participate in the research of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) and the non-invasive mechanical ventilation (NIV) research lines.

Mauricio Valencia succesfully defended his doctoral thesis: prevention of complications associated with mecahnical ventilation
The public event was held last April 14th in the University of Barcelona, Faculty of Medicine
Mauricio Valencia is an intensive care physishian who is currently working in the Medical Intensive Care Service in the Hospital Universitario del Sagrat Cor in Barcelona. However, he carried out his doctoral thesis in the Applied Research in Respiratory diseases IDIBAPS group, which is led by Prof. Antoni Torres. During his stay in Hospital Clinic, Dr.Valencia’s research focused on the prevention of complications associated with mecahnical ventilation. Results were published in two first quartile journals which have a high impact factor: American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine and Critical Care Medicine. The public event took place last April 14th in the University of Barcelona, Faculty of Medicine, Room 15, and the thesis tribunal comprised Dra. Paula Ramírez, from Hospital La Fe in Valencia, Dr. Antoni Artigas, from Parc Taulí in Sabadell and Dr. Javier Ruiz, from Hospital Universitari del Sagrat Cor in Barcelona.

Prof. Antoni Torres is one of the three candidates that will run in the presidential election of the Sociedad Española de Neumología y Cirugía Torácica (SEPAR)
Results will be published during the next SEPAR Annual Congress that will be held in Oviedo on 17-20 June
Section Head of the Pneumology Service in Hospital Gregorio Marañón Pilar de Lucas Ramos; specialist pneumologist in Centro de Especialidades Dr. Fleming de Sevilla Francisco Álvarez Gutiérrez and Professor of Medicine, UVIR Director in the Pneumology Service and UCI’s coordinator in Institut Clínic del Tòrax in Hospital Clínic Antoni Torres Martí are the three candidates that will run in the presidential election of the Sociedad Española de Neumología y Cirugía Toracica (SEPAR). Miquel Ferrer awarded for the best clinical presentation of the XXIX Diada Pneumològica organized by Societat Catalana de Pneumologia (SOCAP)
The event took place the 7th, 8th and 9th of April at Internacional Business Center of Badalona
Dr. Miquel Ferrer’s project Corticoides inhalados, respuesta inflamatoria sistémica y mortalidad en la neumonía adquirida en la comunidad won the best presentation award at the XXIX Diada Pneumològica organized by Societat Catalana de Pneumologia (SOCAP) on last April the 9th, in a specific session for oral comunications in which the three best presentations on Medicine, Physiotherapy and Nursing are usually presented.

Significance of the Presence of Lymphocytes in the Cytological Analysis of Transbronchial Needle Aspiration
The presence of lymphocytes in the transbronchial needle aspiration (TBNA) sample does not exclude the neoplasic invasión of the specific lymph node analyzed. This is the conclusion reached in the trial that has been carried out by Dr. Carmen Mª Lucena, Dr. Carlos Agustí, Dr. Pilar Martínez-Olondris (members of the Applied Research in Respiratory Diseases group) and Dr. Esteban Cano-Jiménez, Dr. Ramón Mª Marrades, Dr. Josep Ramírez, Dr. Marcelo Sánchez, Dr. Pedro Arguis and Dr. Antoni Xaubet, from Hospital Clínic.

IAMR group incorporates a research physician from Brazil in the line of clinical and experimental VAP
This fellow comes from the University of São Paulo to get experience in research
The latest incorporation at the research group is Otavio Tavares Ranzani, who has a Degree in Medicine at the University of São Paulo. He has completed his specialization on Internal Medicine at the Hospital das Clínicas, a hospital complex associated with the Faculty of Medicine of University of São Paulo. He currently works as a research physician in Pulmonary and Critical Care issues at the Respiratory ICU in the same university. In our group, he has been helping in the research of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) and in the animal experimental model line.

A recent study compares simple, difficult and prolonged weaning in ICU patients

The International Consensus Conference classified weaning into simple, difficult, and prolonged but its usefulness in a respiratory intensive care unit (ICU) had not yet been proved. From the 4th of March the study: “Predictors of prolonged weaning and survival during ventilator weaning in a respiratory ICU” is available online. This study aimed to compare the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients from the three weaning groups and to assess predictors for prolonged weaning and survival.

Key features of clinical presentation of patients with novel H1N1 associated pneumonia compared to seasonal influenza pneumonia
This collaborative study was published last 25th of November in the European Respiratory Journal
A recent study of Dr. Raul Riquelme, from the University of San Sebastian and the Puerto Mont Hospital in Chile, and Dr. Antonio Torres, Chief of Intensive Care Unit of Respiratory (UVIR) in the Hospital Clinic and group leader of the Applied Research in Respiratory Diseases (IAMR) team of the IDIBAPS, has investigated patients with influenza A (H1N1) and seasonal influenza pneumonia. Data of clinical presentation, complications and outcomes have been comparatively analysed in the two groups of patients.

Distribution of aetiologies according to severity scores revealed corresponding patterns in Community Acquired Pneumonia patients
Reveals the latest study on aetiology of Community Acquired Pneumonia that has been published in Thorax
This is the first study on aetiology of Community Acquired Pneumonia (CAP) by severity scores and gives an important perspective of what microorganisms are correspond to each severity class in the last 12 years, in a population of 3.523 CAP patients. The present work has been carried out by the doctoral researcher Catia Cilloniz and it is part of her doctoral thesis, directed by Prof. Torres.

The latest incorporation at the research group is Valeria Giunta, who has a Degree in Medicine at the University of Milano. At the moment she is attending the specialization in the respiratory area at the University of Milan. Her role in our group will consist of helping in the ventilator associated pneumonia line of research, and in the animal experimental model line as well.
